Whybin\TBWA Auckland news confirmed: Todd McLeay appointed Chief Executive Officer and Toby Talbot appointed Chief Creative Officer

Todd+Toby_Comp1-web.jpgWhybin\TBWA Auckland has officially confirmed CB's two  stories yesterday, announcing the appointments of Todd McLeay (near left) as chief executive officer and Toby Talbot (far left) as chief creative officer - who replace founding CEO David (Devo) Walden and ECD Andy Blood.

Says Keith Smith, TBWA President - International: "I am delighted that we have attracted two outstanding and proven performers. It's a very exciting time for us and with Todd and Toby on board, we are well positioned to take our business to the next level in New Zealand." Smith added, "This unique partnership is a blueprint for a new order of how we run our agencies in this rapidly changing world."
McLeay joins Whybin\TBWA following a successful career in running marketing and media organizations. Most recently, he was chief operating officer of APN New Zealand where he was responsible for all APN's local publishing and digital business, including the New Zealand Herald. Prior to that, he was CEO of NZ Lotteries.

Says Scott Whybin, founder and chairman of Whybin\TBWA Group: "McLeay has a reputation as one of the most customer-centric business leaders in New Zealand and has an excellent track record of growing businesses with creative marketing strategies."

Critically, Talbot and McLeay have worked together before. "When I was CEO of Lotteries I worked very closely with Toby who was ECD at DDB," said McLeay. "Not only did we produce some of the country's most loved advertising, but we grew the business - one of New Zealand's largest consumer brands - in a very significant way. That's the combination of creative and commercial success we want to bring to TBWA's clients."

Ending months of speculation about Talbot in what can only be described as a creative coup for Whybin\TBWA, the multi-award winning creative director returns to Auckland from Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe Y&R in London, where he was ECD. Before that, he was responsible for some of New Zealand's most iconic campaigns including work for brands such as SKY TV, NZ Lotteries and Steinlager. Talbot was responsible for DDB's numerous 'Agency of the Year' titles, including Campaign Brief's 'New Zealand Agency of the Year' for the last three consecutive years - a feat unsurpassed by any New Zealand agency.

"Toby is a world-renowned creative leader," says John Hunt, TBWA's worldwide creative director. "He's been a top ranked ECD in the world for the past decade. His personal award tally is scattered across every festival. He totally transformed DDB in Auckland, and I know he has ambitious plans for Whybin\TBWA. I think Toby and Todd are going to be a unique, winning combination."

"Being ECD of a great London agency and working alongside people of the calibre of Mark Roalfe on brands like the BBC has been an incredible experience," Talbot said. "But the truth is, New Zealand has had a strong gravitational pull all year for my family. The prospect of joining Whybin\TBWA in partnership with Todd was just too good an opportunity to pass up. I've always admired Scott Whybin, David Walden and Andy Blood, and the operation and culture they've created around the impressive list of clients they work with."

David Walden will assist McLeay in the handover. "Toby and I look forward to tapping into Devo's vast knowledge in the first months. He's a legend in New Zealand advertising. We can learn a lot from him," says McLeay. Meanwhile, Blood will be helping Talbot transition into his new role.

I hope 2013 is even more successful and I think it's brilliant that Toby will be part of that," said Blood (left). "I decided last year that I wanted to move on. To start afresh and explore new opportunities."

Screen shot 2013-02-07 at 7.15.08 AM.jpg"Andy has been with us for almost nine years and has contributed enormously to our strong growth and creative reputation," said Whybin. "Filling Andy's shoes was a near impossible task so we are thrilled that Toby, who has an impeccable creative reputation and truly understands the New Zealand market, will be joining us."

"I'm extremely proud of the group we've built here in New Zealand since Scott and I started the company in 1997," said Walden (left). "Whybin/TBWA's continued success is important to me and I know the agency will be in great hands with Toby and Todd".

Expect the new team to be "Raiders of the Lost Ark" as the wrestle Lotteries from the Ark on Grey's Ave.

The only non-agency CEO to really succeed has been Brian Crawford. He's been a good leader at Draft, but they've never married that with great creative or a challenger agenda. Will be interesting to see how this goes.

Unlikely said:

@Noah do you really think a new CEO wants the old CEO in their agency telling them what to do with their business?

"Talbot was responsible for DDB's numerous 'Agency of the Year' titles...". Typical Talbot show in full swing - of course no-one else had anythign to do with winning these titles, it was all him.
PS: He didn't even work on Steinlager - McKechnie, Galvin and Grafton did it all while he was away.

Great run by Devo & Andy. Tons of Lions and business wins. The Farewell Party should be about as epic as they get.

New team will be brilliant. Best of luck.

Brand fit said:

Devo and Andy embody TBWA. McLeay and Talbot are about as fitting as Rocky and Mike running the now defunct Droga5.

Noah said:

@Unlikely. You would be right...if the CEO of Lotteries was the real driver of that business. But I believe it's the CFO who really holds sway with the NZL Board...watch that space...

Let's All Claim We Worked On It said:

@Over-claim. The bit I'm really not looking forward to is the 24 hour a day publicity machine. All those nauseatingly grandiose releases.

Interesting. McLeay was recently disestablished and restructured at APN as per this article. http://apnregionalnz.newspaperdirect.com/epaper/viewer.aspx

Good luck Andy! said:

Andy, you are one of the very rare breeds bursting with talent and bloody nice with it.

@Connan - mate just because you're freelancing post Whybins - assuming it is you posting - no need to be quite that sycophantic. It'll be a while before Toby starts using freelance talent I suspect - he'll be busy wet nursing McCleay. And yes agree a great run by Devo and Andy and correct again it will be a legendary send off.

New team will be brilliant? How do you know? One of them has never been agency side and never a client of yours either. Agree with whoever said sychophantic.

What a completely bollocks way to handle this changeover. It is old-school PR BS. We don't buy it and don't like it.

The real winner here is Corporate Cabs. They've just put on 10 more drivers.

Capri said:

Looking forward to seeing you again, Andy.

Nice one McHuge. Fatty.

See you haven't changed one bit. Goes to show, money doesn't buy you everything. Least of all a sense of humour.

Insider said:

@the king, it appears it's you that has lost your humour. Lighten up Tobes.

It must be said. said:

Very, very self-serving, old-school PR.

Times have changed and this is not a cool way to handle the management change of two well-liked leaders.

That is all.

I always admired the work David and Andy did over the years.
It always felt fresh but strategically on the button.
Shame to see them moving on.
I imagine where ever they end up they will continue to deliver the goods for their clients.
