CAANZ organisers get together to present the evolution of the Axis programme ready for 2013 Awards at Viaduct Events Centre, Thurs, May 9

axis.jpgCAANZ, the organisers of the prestigious Axis Awards last night presented the evolution of the Axis programme that they believe will ensure it remains a credible, inspirational celebration of the New Zealand industry's best work.

Call for entries are still open, click here to enter.
The Axis Awards day of speaker events and the Getty Images Axis Award Exhibition will be held at the Viaduct Events Centre on Thursday 9th May 2013. The winners will be revealed at the Axis Awards Show to be held that evening.

Says Paul Head, CAANZ CEO: "It became clear last year that Axis needed to evolve if it was to remain relevant to agencies and also play a role in changing perceptions about the value of commercial creativity. Axis should be an event that is a truly inspirational celebration of the amazing creative work being produced in New Zealand."

Assisting in the evolution was a review panel that included past Axis Award Committee members and some of the industry's leading ECDs who spent the past six months thoroughly analysing the Axis Awards structure and looking at what other award programmes were doing, most notably Cannes. Their brief was to 'fix' the judging process so it has greater transparency and ensure there is an appropriate balance of local and international input. They were also tasked with raising the profile of Axis and reaching a broader audience.

Evolving Axis means significant changes need to be made going forward and these will be introduced in 2013. There will now be three core components of the Axis Awards: a day of speaker events, an exhibition of finalists' work and the Awards Show.

The day of speaker events has evolved from the creative function that has existed for many years and will be held the day of the awards and will include a bigger line up of keynote speakers. Three of these speakers come in the form of this year's international judges, namely Chris Wall Vice Chairman, North America at Ogilvy & Mather, from Ogilvy & Mather in Chicago; Damon Stapleton, Executive Creative Director from Saatchi & Saatchi, Sydney and Feh Tarty, Creative Director from Mother in London. Other keynote speakers are being brought to NZ by some of the Axis Award sponsors.

CAANZ announced they have secured Getty Images as sponsor for the Axis exhibition.

Says Arran Birchenough, senior manager at Getty Images New Zealand: "The Getty Images team is thrilled to be partnering with CAANZ to bring to life the inaugural Getty Images Axis Awards Exhibition. It is immensely rewarding to recognise and help foster local creative talent, and the exhibition presents a fantastic platform to showcase the impressive depth and range of talent that exists within the industry."  The Getty Images Axis Awards Exhibition will showcase the finalists work and will be open to the public in order to raise the profile of the work being produced.

Other changes have been made to the awards programme itself, namely the introduction of jury presidents and Grand Prix awards which may be awarded in each jury category. And the anticipation of a new trophy to enhance the trophy cabinet continues the Axis evolution. The form of the new Axis trophy is a closely guarded secret and will be revealed on the night.

CAANZ also announced a sponsor for the Production Company of the Year Award in Apex General Ltd (Apex).

Says James McGhie, Apex managing director: "We are proud to partner with CAANZ and sponsor the Production Company of the Year award. Being film, media & television insurance specialists we want to support an industry that has been fantastic at supporting Apex. Apex also wants to recognise creative brilliance in New Zealand which reflects our own core values in our own industry and this is our way of doing that."

The creative theme for the Axis Awards 2013, developed by Saatchi & Saatchi celebrates the Goddess of Creativity.

Start by apologising for last years bullshit. Explain why we had to shell out
large money to watch NZ's two best campaigns go without awards, while we
watch the president's ads and Toyota's worst Hilux ad in 20 yrs clean up.

Admit that, then say you're changing and maybe the industry will care, other wise you'll rapidly be the MADC.

Mate, it's not really worth getting angry about. Chill your boots and worry about something more important.

If it's not worth worrying about, not much point in holding them is there?

Lost all credibility with that Hilux win. Next.

Didn't we hear this shit last year? Then they award the 2011 Axis award show opening video a Gold Axis! For Christ's sake it wasn't even an ad! It was a video to open an award show. And it was a Gold Axis!

There is no coming back from that.

P.S. While we're at it, can someone also explain how an ambient stunt/TVC won the Nexus Grand Prix for DM two weeks ago?

Bring in a top comedian, a famous writer, and a successful silicon valley geek.

We need some real world creatives to be judging these things.
