DraftFCB Auckland's Kelly Lovelock and Hywel James win February ORCA for sexy call girl stunt

Hywel & Kelly.jpgDraftFCB Auckland's Kelly Lovelock (right) and Hywel James (left) has won February's ORCA for their sexy stunt promoting the premiere of Prime TV's Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

Lovelock and James picked a bedroom window overlooked by the More FM Drive Show and gave them something to really talk about... one gent, one 'call-girl' and three afternoons of 'performances'.

More FM's Network PD, Ande Macpherson worked closely with Draft to set-up the Drive Show presenters, ensuring they were completely taken in. And they were, sharing the activities of their naughty neighbour on-air and online with the footage quickly going viral here and abroad.

Judges' comments included: "Brilliant", "Loved this! Finally the pranksters get pranked!" and "Excellent use of the medium."

The DraftFCB team now compete at the Grande ORCAs for the trips to the Cannes Lions and cash prizes. They also get to host the ORCA trophy and get $500, certificates and a $5,000 radio schedule for Prime TV.

Entries close on the 15th of each month.

Thanks to this month's judges: Philip Andrew (Clemenger BBDO), Karl Fleet (Clemenger BBDO Adelaide), Kate Humphries (Media Design School) and Phil Yule (Voice Box).

Good on you Hilly. And everyone else too, of course.

Funny idea, but not really a radio ad is it boys, more of a stunt?

Glen said:

And who attended the auditions lads???

Clever clever work.

I love the smell of a scam in the afternoon

Glen said:

@Category - I think the point is that it takes the basic idea of a radio ad and subverts it into something bigger, better and smarter.
@hmmm - I always thought a scam was something that got printed in an office newsletter or screened once at midnight on community access TV. Widespread coverage for an actual client and an actual product doesn't really smell of scam. There is a reek of creative jealously about your comment though hmmm.
And no I don't work (or sleep) with any of the creatives.

Glen - This is not really a radio ad though is it?

On ya Lovelock, brilliant,

Glen said:

@Category - Well it used the medium of radio, it advertised a product (effectively) - I guess it depends on whether we still want to be stuck in the 30" jingle definition of advertising forever? Seems it was good enough for The Radio Bureau anyway. A message to try harder and think a little more laterally perhaps?

It's radio category for sure!

Is it radio? Is it viral? is it both?

Who cares. It's bloody good.

Great you can pay off your tab.

This looks a bit more like a stunt than a radio ad. If someone talks about a tv spot on radio does that make it a radio ad too? Best radio 'ads' use the medium in an innovative way, but still use it as paid for medium. This is just some radio guys talking about a stunt. Nice stunt though, been done before in Brazil though.

ORCA = Outstanding Radio Creativity Award.

Outstanding use of radio for sure.

Argument over.

ORCA Entry Form said:

ORCA Entry Form requires a key number and booking numbers.

This stunt doesn't have a key number nor a booking number, so how can it be a radio ad.

If my stunt or TV ad or Facebook app gets talked about on radio, can I then enter it in Radio category?

Radio, The Medium said:

ORCA Entry Form, did you ever consider that maybe its you that's not right for the category?

Way to be out of date.

@ORCA Entry Form said:

Booking and key numbers are probably required to check if the ad actually ran.
In this case it clearly did.
Hopefully you can get someone to talk about your next stunt or Facebook app. However, you're clearly missing the big picture - that being it's a great was to harness the radio medium to spread a message and get some interest in the show. Job done mo fo. Stop your petty whinging and get back to crafting your 30 second spot.

@ The Medium said:

Its a PR/Experiential Stunt that got alot of PR pick-up, namely in the radio space but also the social space.

Given your reasoning, it should be entering in radio and digital as opposed to experiential correct?

Did it involve radio YES, is it good YES, did it win YES.

Does anyone at Draft actually work, or just sit on this blog all day?

At the moment we're drinking beer out of a fire truck and eating pizza.

...doesn't have a key number ... how can it be a radio ad?

Not fitting easily into an easily defined category should be a good thing in advertising. Well done guys.

its 2013 aye said:

It's a great ad, and it may not have a key number, but the stunt was pulled specifically to create radio content, and it succeeded, so its a radio ad. well done!

Is that Clint Eastwood?

Since when did playing a prank on a radio station constitute a radio ad?? Only in NZ. Things are getting a bit scammy over at FCB these days. Next they'll be trying to teach a pig to fly. Air NZ and pak n save.

work guys.

Still got the porn eye aye Hywel.

Great radio, you can tell from all the fans denigrating the work they wish they had done.

@ WTF said:

'Since when did playing a prank on a radio station constitute a radio ad?'

Since Kelly and Hywel did it. It's called an original idea bro. It's kinda what this industry is about. Sorry it doesn't fit nicely into that little 30sec space in your brain where you think up radio ads. Tell ya what, you stick to doing the same old tired and done before stuff and leave new, original uses of media to the grownups.
That ok with you?

Can all the Draft FCB staff members pumping this radio stunt up shut up, go back to your desks and do some real work. Thank you.

@Worker said:

No, you're one x infinity +1.

This is just another piece of sexist sleaze that is endemic in this industry. Slug back another beer and slap yourselves on the back and swing those cocks around some more. And if you find this even mildly entertaining then you really have to question your own intelligence.

YUK said:

Fuck you Campaign Brief for censoring an honest piece of commentary and perpetuating the sexism in this industry. Shame on you.
