3.jpgDavid Bell, former CD of Adschool at the Media Design School NZ and freelance art director has just released the illustrated edition of his epic story ‘The Dog Hunters’, showing that there is indeed, creative life beyond the creative department.

Weighing in at a hefty 388 pages, with more than 230 detailed cross hatched drawings, it’s the result of more than six months hard labour, partly financed by Bell’s successful Kickstarter campaign which was one of the first in New Zealand.

“Needless to say, many of the people who pledged to the Kickstarter project were those among our friends in the NZ and Oz advertising industry (Bell’s partner is the legendary Jeneal Rohrback of Marsden Inch Recruitment in Auckland).”

For the moment, the book exists only as print on demand and as an eBook through Amazon. Without a ‘traditional’ publisher, Bell has had to draw on 30 years of advertising experience, and the going isn’t easy.

Says Bell: “Having fractional advertising and production budgets makes publicising the book a challenge, and I’ve had to immerse myself in many aspects of marketing that most ad creatives are insulated from. But it’s given me useful insights into the realities of the business, both old and new, and I think the process has made me a better advertiser, especially in the digital environment. For instance since Christmas, I’ve been patiently pushing the developing body of drawings through the global facebook Wolfhound communities which has been an interesting and fruitful exercise in both seeding and niche marketing.”
