DDB wins Newspaper Ad of the Month for BMW April Fools ad; Colenso receives special mention
DDB has won April’s Newspaper Ad of the Month with its BMW April Fools ad. Judges agreed “a refreshing April Fools ad that needed newspapers to work … and it definitely did that”. Judges also acknowledged the extension to the April Fools ad which ran the next day congratulating the winner.
Special Mention was awarded to Colenso BBDO for its NZ Breast Cancer Foundation ad and judges said “It was lovely seeing a woman with wrinkles being celebrated”.
This month’s win adds another 5 points to DDB’s lead, and a point to Colenso bumps Barnes, Catmur & Friends down a notch.
Judges were Verity Dookia (Contagion), James Bowman (bcg2) and Josh Lancaster (Assignment).
The Ad of the Month winning team receive $250 and Agency League points for its agency, which is tallied on a league table to run from July 2014 – June 2015.
Ad of the Month and Agency League also accept entry from newspaper digital ads, as well as newspaper print ads. News Works’ Ad of the Month and Agency League competition is open to any ad that has appeared on a New Zealand newspaper website or app, or in any print edition. Both digital and print entries vie together for the best monthly accolade, with only one individual ad to be selected top each month – although judges may give special mentions to a number of exceptional ads.

Every monthly winner from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015 will automatically be entered into the $10,000 Newspaper Ad of the Year at the end of this year.
