FreshUp_ChadvsLarry_PRImage1 (2).jpgNext Tuesday evening, two mates from the ‘Naki’ will take their ongoing rivalry to epic proportions. In a live and televised Fresh-up event via Colenso BBDO, the lads will battle it out in three events over 45 minutes as they attempt to beat their mate and smash their thirst.

Fresh-up went looking for contenders back in November. They found Chad and Larry, mates since high-school, and rivals for just as long.

Says Craig Irwin, marketing director, Frucor: “We had a lot of great entries but Chad and Larry stood out. Two great mates, two fierce rivals, a tradie versus a doctor, who were already in the habit of videoing their rivalry, I don’t think we could have hoped for a more perfect combination.”

The three events on the night include a Mechanical Bull Ride, Couch Pull Strongman and a Hot Curry Challenge. Two of the events are grudge re-matches. The Hot Curry is a particular four year old sore point. Video footage from the original shows Larry thinking he’d won the eating event until Chad suddenly licked his takeaway container to claim the victory.

FreshUp_ChadvsLarry_PRImage2 (2).jpgLarry says in one of their webisodes, “It’s debatable who really won that one, so we want to have a rematch.”

Says Chad: “This is about finding out who is the better athlete and human being.”

The episodic web films captured by Colenso and TVNZ Blacksand have been released weekly giving online followers insight into Chad and Larry’s background and track their preparations as the big night looms.

Says Steve Cochran, ECD, Colenso BBDO: “For decades Fresh-up made TV ads featuring rivalling mates, but they were always scripted and acted. This campaign sees us documenting two real mates with a real rivalry. And giving them the opportunity to put that rivalry on a national stage. We’re treating FreshUp_ChadvsLarry_PRImage3 (2).jpgthis live televised event as a 45-minute brand spot – albeit with commercial breaks. So, it’s a pretty exciting and slightly nerve-wrecking project.”

The event promises to have all the lavish production of a major professional sporting event or title fight in a packed Q Theatre. It will be covered by TVNZ’s outside broadcast unit with six cameras and live TV director.

The evening will be hosted by sports presenter Andrew Saville, adding a certain amount of maturity and professionalism to the night. But he’ll also be aided by the Short and Wide team who’ll no doubt bring the opposite.

A slick boxing event style promo spot, produced by Duke, is presently running across TVNZ channels promoting the night, as are radio spots and some impressive looking street posters. A number of live interviews are also lined up for the boys in the build-up.

The show will be screened live on TVNZ Duke at 8.30pm. More information and free tickets for Tuesday night at Q theatre in central Auckland can be found at freshup.co.nz.

Says Cochran: “The lad’s local bar in New Plymouth, Crowded House, plans to host friends and family that can’t make it up to Auckland. We’re going to make sure they’re well stocked with Fresh-up.”
