Paw Justice launches new ‘Don’t Trade Me’ campaign to #StopPuppyMilling via DDB NZ
DDB has launched its latest Paw Justice campaign today which calls for online auction sites like Trade Me to put regulations* in place to control the sales of dogs and stop puppy milling. The campaign has kicked off with live auctions on Trade Me selling advertisements to support the campaign, which all sold out within five hours.
Every year thousands of puppies are sold online in New Zealand. Often these puppies start their lives in tiny, filth-ridden cages, innocently burdened with ongoing injury and illness. There are no rules about how puppies sold online are bred; sellers don’t need permits, vet checks and site visits, and they can overbreed their dogs without public knowledge or consequence.
With puppies being one of the most popular search terms on Trade Me and over 35,000 cats and dogs sold on the auction site in 2014 alone, sites like Trade Me are enabling puppy millers in New Zealand. To put a stop to this practice Paw Justice joined forces with DDB once again and created this Don’t Trade Me campaign.
Says Craig Dunn, co-founder, Paw Justice: “It’s time someone stood up against puppy milling. Dogs are sensitive and loyal companions, not breeding machines to be locked up and used for money. Puppies should grow into happy, healthy adults, not dogs facing a lifetime of illness or disability because of irresponsible breeders who only care about profit. We need sites like Trade Me to play a role in regulating this industry. Puppy milling must stop.”
DDB executive creative director Shane Bradnick is thrilled to be working with Paw Justice again.
Says Bradnick: “Following the success of the Animal Strike campaign that successfully stopped the government from testing legal-highs on animals, we’re excited about mark two.
“Paw Justice is a client focused on getting results, getting Kiwis to act to make a real difference. We know that a clever campaign can help create a much needed change in New Zealand that will benefit our furry little friends and their owners.”

Animals are the most innocent living creature, they can’t say no or yes to you they have no choice but serve their master. Their are good people in this world and also many monsters. Good people care and love them while monsters abuse and even kill them. If you love your cat or dog etc you find a good home and loving people to take care of them. So I’m against of those people breeding and sell animals on trademe or any other source. These greedy people only needs money but doesn’t care who’s the buyer is. not only that the condition of where they keep this poor souls is unexceptable, not good.
I will also want to mention something down regards the rentals (housing) most of houses this days not allowed animals, all because they said the animal ruined and damage their house. The thing is it’s the people that does the damage, more houses are been damaged and ruined because people does drugs in houses. Many people want to take their animals but their landlords wont allow. I moved houses last year and it took me a long time to find a house because I got 3 cats. I love my babies dearly they sleep with me, they make me happy, we found a new home which had a big yard for them to play. A BIG NO NO to those people selling animals on trademe, get a real job to get money NOT from selling animals to stranger. THAT’S ANIMAL ABUSE..
Thanks for the rant Lina.
Good on you Linda
Lina, I love pets, so much so that I no longer own them because it tears my heart out when they either get hurt or die. Thankfully I’m now blessed (or cursed) worrying about my kids.
I sympathise with what you said. I really like what DDB has done here, it’s dominated my FB feed today, a hearty well done to Christie and James, great work.
But I’m also a landlord with three properties. Through the years I’ve suffered from non-paying tenants, absent tenants, abusive tenants and well as tenants who’ve caused so much damage to my property that I’ve had to (twice) turn to the courts (whom are pretty weak in protecting landlords).
I’ve also suffered from tenants whom own pets. Cats are usually ok, fleas and partially buried shit are the only real problems (their poos, Lina, are quite poisonous (Toxoplasmosis); you have to clean the garden and under the house before you lease your property out to people with children. The fleas require a fair bit of treatment, they take a while to kill off during summer.
But dogs are a real pain the arse. Sure, Lina, there are some great dog owners (I know of many agency folk whom are wonderful pet owners, having dogs in the agency does wonders for moral – except when they shit in your office). But dogs in the wrong hands – the type of people whom are generally without a conscience or give a toss about other people property – are plentiful. I’ve had tenants who’ve let their dogs gnaw carpet, stairs, skirting boards, allow them to scrape on outside/inside doors, had curtains ripped to shreds, wallpaper chewed down to the GIB – you name it, I’ve experienced it. Their owners response are generally pretty poor and unhelpful.
As such, pets are a no go. I won’t budge an inch on that position.
In my position, Lina, you’d do the exact same.
Once again, nice work DDB.
Cunts.
Lovely cause and all that but I’d be interested to know whether or not anyone ever actually picked up the phone (you remember those, we had them before websites and case study videos) and asked TradeMe to put an end to this issue. Y’know because maybe it’s something they would take a stand on or get on board with. Then again, maybe not. But I’m still feeling pretty doubtful on that phone call…not when it risks our scammy ad campaign that could win us some gold with international juries who we can dupe into thinking resonated nationally by showing them an out of date news clip with an ex-weather presenter. Boring campaign. I hope they stop puppy milling but I also hope they stop this campaign. Both of which might have happened if someone just tried calling first. P.S. It’s not the sites that need punishing (people will always find another) it’s the licensing and breeding laws that need changing.
Trade Me has been approached by most animal advocate groups on this issue. And they have not budged.
And you’re right; licensing and breeding laws do need to change.
But lets stop the money flow while we’re at it. That’s what keeps it going.
TradeMe were contacted continuously by people trying to get them to set up some rules, to limit puppy milling. Paw Justice tried, individual members within Paw Justice tried, another animal welfare charity called HuHa has tried, and the SPCA has tried. Check out the TradeMe forums and you’ll see many other people asked them to address it too. Funnily enough, within 24 hours of the campaign running, TradeMe come out saying they’re working on some rules and regulations and will have them finalised in 2 weeks time. Activism at work I’d say, and a good campaign to force action from an organisation that was steadfastly ignoring the issue.
Now let’s examine the real reason for this campaign. It’s not quite as good as the last one, slightly more complicated, but still a nice good cause campaign and more importantly perfectly timed for the cannes deadline. Bronze!
It’s shameless awardbait.
I wish our agency had the resources and free time to generate stuff like this, but we’re too busy doing real work.
Maybe one day their clients will realise how much of this they’re subsidising.
Meanwhile, any jobs going up there?
